    English as a Second Language

Set against the beautiful backdrop of the South Chilcotin Mountains, Chilcotin Holidays offers a decidedly unique and breathtaking environment for students of all levels to study English. As part of the extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program, not only are students involved in a comprehensive curriculum, they are also able to fully indulge in the ranch lifestyle while improving both their verbal and written communication skills.

Established in 2007 by Julie McIntyre, in conjunction with Kevan Bracewell, the ESL program is popular with students from all over the world and has been integral in assisting many students to improve their English in a hands on fashion. As students study the theoretical aspects of the langauge and develop their understanding of English in the classroom, they are also given the opportunity to practice their new skills as they interact with guests, staff and other students around the ranch. It is this practical approach to learning that ensures the students develop quickly and are able to effectively communicate using the English language.

Situated north of Whistler, in the remote Chilcotin Mountains, the ranch is located amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in British Columbia. Along side their classroom lessons, students have the chance to explore the surrounding areas and to experience the real Canadian wilderness. From shoeing and riding horses, to hiking local trails, fishing in mountain lakes and assisting with ranch maintenance, the ESL program involves students in a range of different learning situations and encourages them to take part in all aspects of ranch living. The experiential method of teaching provides an authentic context for students to engage in conversation and is a corner stone of the course.

The philosophies underpinning the ESL program are mirrored throughout the ranch itself. All staff, regardless of their background, are encouraged to communicate in English while at the ranch, meaning that students are totally immersed in an English environment for the length of their stay. These challenges and learning opportunities presented to students promote not only improvements in English proficiency but also self development.
